Antique mercury vessel on stand
Antique mercury vessel on stand
A rare relic of medieval maritime trade, this antique mercury vessel was recovered from shipwreck sites in the Java Sea where it lay submerged for centuries before being rediscovered. Hand crafted during the Song Dynasty period, these vessels were originally created for the storage and transportation of mercury - an important material in medicine, metallurgy and early scientific practice.
The vessel’s simple, utilitarian shape is elevated by its age-worn surface, marked by subtle mineral deposits, irregular colouration and natural imperfections gained through time and immersion. These characteristics are not flaws, but authentic traces of its journey - evidence of human use, maritime trade, and centuries beneath the sea.
Presented on a minimalist stand, each vessel is transformed into a sculptural object, allowing its form and history to be appreciated from every angle. Its raw, pale clay and archaeological patina give it a quietly powerful presence, making it an arresting focal point in both contemporary and eclectic interiors.
